Center of Excellence in Photonics

Promoting light research and innovation

The Center of Excellence in Photonics (Leistungszentrum Photonik) is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Leibniz Institutes HKI and IPHT, and the Helmholtz Institute Jena.

It develops new solutions with light for important future fields and promotes their implementation and application in science, economy, and society. To this end, it combines practical research and innovative development with scientifically excellent basic research into the control of light – spanning from its creation to its practical implementation.

The next step in the development of photonics is characterized by intelligent system solutions. The increasing fusion with semiconductor technology is not only leading to further development of the photonic products themselves, but above all to intelligent networking and system integration of the individual components to form a problem-solving whole.

The Center of Excellence in Photonics focuses its works on these application fields:

  • Information and communication technology
  • Production
  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Safety and security
  • Health and environment
  • Research

The Center of Excellence in Photonics pursues a close partnership with industry and science and faces the challenges of establishing new models of cooperation.

Key measures include:

  • Industry Sabbatical Program
  • Open Labs Initiative
  • Anchor Projects in the areas of fiber laser development, highly dynamic optical sensor technology and next-generation projection and imaging systems
  • Fraunhofer Graduate Research School of Applied Photonics
